The state of Maharashtra lies on west coast of India. Most of the state stands on the high Deccan plateau. One of India’s most economically advanced states; industries are concentrated in the urban areas and agriculture spread throughout the state.

The major industries of the state are chemical products, textiles, petroleum, pharmaceuticals, electrical & engineering goods, machine tools, steel, iron and plastic ware.

Historically, it was the main centre of the Maratha Empire under the legendary Shivaji. Numerous rock temples and caves are spread all along. The Ajanta and Ellora are renowned for their paintings. Scores of forts in the Western Ghats bear witness of the might of the Maratha rulers. Royal patronage nurtured the theatre tradition and encouraged various crafts, especially weaving
