The cultural heritage of the state is over 5000 years old. Several dynasties like the Pallavas and the Cholas encouraged the growth of classical music, dance sculpture and art, all of which attained great excellence. Situated on the North Eastern side of the Indian peninsula, Tamil Nadu constitutes of two main natural divisions, the eastern coastal plain end and the hilly region along the north and the west. The state is the country's largest producer of rice. Places like Kanchipuram, Tiruchiraplli, Madurai, Mahabalipuram, Kanyakumari and Rameshwaram make Tamil Nadu a temple treat. An important group of wildlife reserves, some fine beaches there are a number of pleasant hill stations, including the famous Udhagamandalam (Ooty).
